Today you’re off to explore the rich culture and history of the former Lao capital as you visit temples, museums, art centers and hidden alleys. Visit the ordination halls of temples such as Wat Xieng Thong, Wat Visoun. Then walk through the historic former Royal Palace Museum as a residence for King Sisavang and explore the diverse cultures and traditions of Laos’ hill tribes at the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre. For early risers, you can join the local people in the special dawn visit as they gain merit by making food offerings to the local monks on their daily alms collection. As the procession of saffron robed monks passes by, people place a small serving of fresh sticky rice into their bowls. After breakfast at your hotel, embark on a two-hour boat trip up the Mekong River, passing many small villages with women panning for gold and children playing on the banks, to the limestone Pak Ou caves. For hundreds of years, it is a destination for local pilgrimages and devotees also deposit their own Buddha statues. On the return journey, stop for a short while in one of the Whiskey and Waving Vllages. These villagers along the river’s banks have made a living by trading hand-woven cloth and stoneware jars, and brewing a particularly strong rice whiskey called “lao-lao” for centuries.
